My favourite mith

In Vancouver, 1001 things to do with a skirt, an exhibition about my favourite mith: Ana Suromai.

The images and stories are based on the ancient, mysterious gesture known as “Ana Suromai”, literally “to raise the skirt”. The origins of this intriguing gesture come to light in the Demeter, Persephone story from Ancient Greece. The gesture haunts so much of subsequent mythology and story that it can hardly be ignored.

Ana Suromai (“to raise the skirt”) was an incitement to transformation. And while its spiritual implications were deep, it encouraged laughter as a conduit to renewal. It resonates in fables in the guise of mysterious things concealed beneath a woman’s skirt and continues into modern times with the ever-present and compelling image of Marilyn Monroe’s skirts billowing over a subway grate. As anyone who as ever work a skirt will tell you it is a spontaneous gesture.

And my own version of the mith:

Faking It!

A team of queer creatives all working for free we were mobilised by the topslicing of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the general arts cuts carnage to do something about it all and set up our own DIY film weekend to replace the one that we lost from the main festival.

Join us at the Book Club for free screenings and performances. It will be nicely extravagant and provocative to satisfy the queerest of us….

MC Radek Anais Laró, master of his own queer as fuck personas, uses a specific visual language, utilizing fashion iconography to comment on society. Radek will be using his own idiosyncratic viewpoint to tantalize , tease and to tell us off.

London sex worker open university 2011 call for submissions

Dear friends, sex workers, allies, academics, artists ….

We now invite submissions for the next Sex Worker Open University which will happen 12th – 16th of October 2011 in London, UK. Like at our last event in April 2009, we will create a space for anyone involved in sex work and sex worker activism to come together for debate, workshops, films, to socialise, learn new skills and empower themselves! If you have an idea for a something that you’d like to happen please get in touch.

S.W.O.U will happen in different places in London: community centres, universities, clubs and the streets! We are working with very limited funding, so though we cannot cover travel costs we are looking at ways to raise funds – so let us know your needs and we will see what we can do.

Tiene muy buena pinta!
